My Photos - Summer 2008 'Pelion mountain, Magnesia, Thessaly' |
Mount Pelion is straddling an inverted L-shaped peninsula whose length runs from north to south along the Aegean coastline of the
Prefecture of Magnesia, which is located in the plain of Thessaly right in the heartland of Greece. The base of the peninsula
turns in a right angle due west to embrace the Pagasitikos Gulf. Due to the fact that the mountain runs all along the peninsula, the term
Pelion is also used for the peninsula itself. The north to south axis has a length of approximately 45 klm while the west to east axis ranges between 25
and 10 klm.
Mount Pelion is a densely forested natural fortress. Mount Pelion was roamed by the centaurs, the most famous of whom was Cheiron, a great teacher renowned for his knowledge and wisdom. Pelion is the mountain for all seasons! Summer is paradise come to Pelion. Nature is at its best: lush vegetation, pretty flowers and blossoms, all sorts of fruit ripening on the trees, bees flitting from aromatic herbs to blooming honeysuckle, nightingales serenading the huge full moon... Autumn has its own special beauty. The foliage sings its swan song in variegated colours. When one walks in the woods his eyes feast in rainbow colours. It is chestnut and walnut season, and in case one does not notice it, the squirrels will see to it as they busy... Winter is time when the Pelion villages, unspoilt and pretty as ever, come out of hiding and become visible. The weather conditions vary depending on the altitude and the general weather pattern. There are long periods of beautiful sunlit days with... Spring in Pelion is a little late in coming especially in the higher altitudes. It usually sets in in mid April and the entire May, when one can virtually watch buds turn into blossoms and blossoms into leaves and fruits. The mountain, now stripped of snow...
